Summary

To date, there has been a paucity of research on the topic of exercise during pregnancy, and return to exercise, and an active lifestyle postpartum. This population is seen throughout the world, and across the specialty practices in physical therapy. More recently, evidence-based guidelines regarding return to running have been developed, and are being used in practice for return to running, however, there are no evidence-based guidelines regarding return to weight lifting, power training, or other types of exercise postpartum. This topic can be invaluable to a wide range of physical therapy practitioners, and can facilitate improved understanding and decrease apprehension regarding treatment of this population and allow for improved outcomes and improved maternal health and wellbeing across the care continuum.

Upon completion of the course, the attendee will –
• Understand special considerations for the postpartum population when assessing for return to sport or lifting.
• Be able to discuss and implement guidelines and progression back to running in the postpartum period in light of various complications.
• Be able to discuss and implement guidelines, and progression back to weight lifting in the postpartum period in light of various complications.
