Summary
Axial skeletal deformities are commonly diagnosed in childhood or adolescence, however, can have lifelong impacts into adulthood on pain, function, and aesthetics if left untreated. Three of the most common axial skeletal deformities are idiopathic scoliosis, Scheurmann’s Kyphosis, and pectus excavatum. The progressive nature of these conditions, specifically during periods of growth and development, increases the importance of effective management. Historically, management of these conditions has primarily consisted of routine observation, passive bracing, and/or eventual surgical intervention. However, with recent advancements in conservative treatment, specifically physical therapy, patients are able to more actively participate in the management of their condition, often with the goal of avoiding significant surgical intervention or functional limitations post-operatively. While there has been increasing evidence surrounding the treatment of these conditions over the past 10 years, there is still a need for further published evidence on the management of these skeletal deformities and the value of effective treatment. Therefore, clinician expertise is imperative for providing evidence-based care to these patients. This session will provide an overview of these common deformities and discuss effective treatment for preventing deformity progression, reducing pain, and improving function and quality of life. Content will be presented by expert clinicians in this area of practice in a manner that is generalizable and applicable to all experience levels and settings, as well as discuss what specialized services are available and how and when to refer to these services. Case examples, interactive technology, and visuals of specific interventions will be utilized to enhance the audience’s learning.
Upon completion of this session, the attendee will be able to:
- Verbalize diagnostic criteria and the pathomechanics for idiopathic scoliosis, Scheurmann’s Kyphosis, and pectus excavatum.
- Demonstrate screening techniques for idiopathic scoliosis, Scheurmann’s Kyphosis, and pectus excavatum.
- Verbalize current best practice for treatment of axial skeletal deformities.
- Determine when a patient would benefit from specialized care for axial skeletal deformity and how to refer them to a specialized clinician.
