Summary

While basic examination techniques like range of motion assessments and manual muscle testing provide initial insights, they are often insufficient to fully gauge a runner’s ability to handle the stresses of running. To bridge this gap, clinicians can utilize a cluster of evidence-based assessments designed to identify specific deficits in strength, strength endurance, power, and motor control. This approach enables data-driven decisions to address these weaknesses and monitor progress over time. Such data may even help determine when an injured runner is ready to safely return to running.

Upon completion of this session, the attendee will be able to:

  • Explain factors contributing to running-related injuries
  • Summarize the roles of training load and physiologic capacity in injury risk and the limitations of basic assessments.
  • Utilize evidence-based assessments for key deficiencies
  • Apply targeted assessments to identify strength, endurance, power, and motor control deficits in runners.
  • Make data-driven decisions for treatment progress and determine safe timelines for returning to running.
