Summary

Today’s modern physical therapy profession is facing an existential crisis — a quiet erosion of happiness and joy. Clinicians are providing care with limited resources, navigating administrative burdens, and shouldering emotional exhaustion. Students are entering a healthcare landscape in rapid transition, uncertain of where they fit. Educators are leading through a technological revolution that is redefining how knowledge is delivered and how professional identity is formed. The collective question remains: if achievement and success do not lead to sustained happiness, what does?

This presentation challenges the long-standing assumption that professional success automatically results in personal fulfillment. Drawing from contemporary research in positive psychology, behavioral science, and leadership development, participants will examine how purpose, meaning, and intrinsic motivation can be intentionally cultivated within the realities of modern practice. The discussion will emphasize the interplay between professional identity, perceived impact, and long-term well-being — particularly within high-demand clinical environments.

The session will employ evidence-based frameworks and reflective analysis to demonstrate how intentional changes in mindset, gratitude practices, and alignment with core values—among other factors—can promote greater flourishing at both individual and organizational levels. Attendees will gain insight into how these principles translate into measurable outcomes such as engagement, retention, and professional satisfaction.

Participants will leave equipped with practical, research-informed tools that can be immediately implemented within their workplaces and academic settings. The goal is not merely to mitigate burnout, but to rediscover the deeper sense of calling and fulfillment that sustains a thriving, purpose-driven career.

Upon completion of this course, the attendee will be able to -

  • Articulate how the pursuit of meaning and fulfillment contributes to long-term engagement and satisfaction in physical therapy practice.
  • Apply at least two evidence-based strategies to enhance daily professional joy, purpose, and balance in their clinical work.
  • Develop and implement a personalized action plan that strengthens meaning, resilience, and sustainable happiness throughout their career.
