Summary

This presentation is ideal for practicing physical therapists or faculty/clinical instructors looking to improve their skills in delivering and receiving feedback. The provision of feedback is a crucial component for professional growth as it helps narrow the gap between actual and desired performance. Feedback provides information about the quality of performance and enhances development by supporting effective decision-making. Clinicians and students alike face challenges in providing and receiving feedback and as a result it tends to be underutilized in the clinic. Like other clinical skills, the ability to offer feedback requires effort and training. Providing meaningful feedback is more than sandwiching the negative with the positive. Creating an environment and expectation for feedback is the critical first step to ensure feedback that is both sustainable and effective. In this session we will discuss the need for and steps to create a clinical environment to facilitate active learning for physical therapists ranging from entry-level students to experienced clinicians. We will discuss the role of feedback for professional growth and strategies to create a learning environment and expectation that facilitates the delivery and utilization of feedback within a clinic.

Upon completion of this course, the attendee will –
• Be able to describe the value and evidence for feedback throughout the spectrum from entry-level education to the clinical setting.
• Be able to discuss the key tenets of effective feedback and how these can be implemented in a clinical setting.
• Be able to discuss the role of the educator and student in the feedback process.
• Understand how to create a clinical environment conducive to feedback.
