Health Literacy - Why Does It Matter and How Can I address It?

Summary

Problems with health literacy can affect patients’ access to physical therapy, participation in treatment, follow through after leaving the treatment session, and health outcomes. As the world of health care becomes more complex, persons with low health literacy are even more vulnerable. What groups of patients are likely to have low health literacy? What are the standardized methods for assessing it? What things can therapists do to be effective with patients who have difficulties in this area?

Presenters
Cathy Bookser-Feister
Cathy Bookser-Feister, PT, DPT, PCS is a physical therapist clinician and PT educator. She is currently a Home Health/Hospice physical therapist for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center but has also worked in adult rehab and geriatrics. Prior to her career as a PT, she worked as a social worker, and she is happy to use this background to help therapists learn to practice more effectively with patients from underserved populations.
